Grandma Ruth’s Apple Betty Pie


  • 4 c. tart apples (Granny Smith), sliced
  • 1/4 c. orange juice
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 3/4 c. flour
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/2 c. butter, softened but not melted


Mound apples in 9″ pie plate. Sprinkle with orange juice. Topping: Combine sugar, flour, spices and a dash of salt. Cut in butter until crumbly and scatter over apples. Bake at 375F for 45 minutes until apples are done and topping is crisp. Can be doubled for a 9″x13″ pan. Serves 6.
